Family Surname Represented with Ditto Marks

In the example above, three names are represented in the circled portion of this imageā€”a Mr Somerville, a Mrs Somerville, and a Miss Somerville. For all three records, you would index Somerville in the Surname field and mark the Given Names field as blank since titles and terms are not indexed in the name fields. Information in the other indexing fields, such as age and gender, will distinguish the three similar records. However, if multiple identical surnames were recorded with no other identifying information to distinguish the records, then index the surname just once for the image and then continue to the next unique entry.
