Minors and Veteran without Surname


On some cards, such as Widow cards, a surname was not recorded for the veteran or for the minors, but it was recorded for the widow or other principal recipient. In this case, index in the guardian's name fields the name of the person whose surname was recorded (the widow or other principal recipient other than the veteran).

For the example image above, you would index three records: one with Mary D Holden as the recipient and one for each of the two minors as the recipient, with Mary D Holden as the guardian for each one.
