Project-Specific Indexing Instructions

Sample Image

  • Some people listed in this project were known by more than one name. If an additional name, such as an alias or an army name, was listed for an individual, type the word "or" between each name.
  • If the clerk used quotation marks or parentheses to indicate an alias or other name, do not include the parentheses or quotation marks when you index the name.
  • For example, if an individual's name is listed as "George T Riker (or George R Thomas)," you would type:
  • Given Name: George T or George R

    Surname: Riker or Thomas

Records per Image

  • The data entry area is set at two records per image.
  • At times the image will contain fewer than two records. Index all the records on the image, and then mark the remaining data entry lines on that image as blank:
  • Press Ctrl+Shift+B.

Click the Mark the record blank icon (three small boxes with a blue X over them).

  • Highlights are not available for this project.

Using the Ruler

  • If you use the ruler, please be aware that the ruler is not anchored to the indexing screen and does not automatically move as you move to a new entry. To see the ruler, follow these steps:
    1. On the menu bar, click View.
    2. Select Show Ruler.
