Draft Cards

  • The draft registration cards have two sides, but only the front has information to be indexed.
  • Three kinds of cards were used for the draft registration. Both sides of the cards appear on the same image.
  • The location of information on the registration cards varies slightly. One major difference is that the third type has no information about the place of birth.

Using Highlights

  • Three types of highlights are available for this project: Draft Card 1, Draft Card 2, and Draft Card 3. Draft Card 1 has 12 questions, Draft Card 2 has 10 questions, and Draft Card 3 has 20 questions. To change the type of highlight:
    1. In the highlight field at the top of the indexing screen, click the drop-down arrow.
    2. Select the highlight type.
  • If the highlights do not appear on your image:
    1. On the menu bar, click View.
    2. Click Show Highlights so that a check mark appears.
  • The highlights may not always line up with the image, particularly when the card is not centered within the image. To adjust the highlights to fit the image:
    1. On the menu bar, click View.
    2. Click Adjust Highlights.
    3. Move the cursor over the image, and all highlights will appear.
    4. Adjust the highlights to match the image.
  • Adjusting highlights may be tricky. Click here for more detailed instructions on how to do it. A key to successfully aligning the highlights with the forms is to first adjust the red outline to encompass the area where the fields are located.
  • If the highlights still do not match the form, you may choose to turn them off.
  • The highlights will match the form only if the front of the card is on the left side of the image. If the front of the card is on the right side of the image, you can either turn off the highlights or ignore them for that image.

Handwriting Helps

  • Many of these records are handwritten. The handwriting resource on the data entry screen may help you decipher handwriting.
  • To access this resource, click on the Handwriting Help icon (which looks like an inkwell with an orange feather quill).
