How to Recognize Norwegian Characters

  • The characters Ø and ø are common and must be distinguished from the letters O and o. In handwritten records, the Ø may appear with the slash through the circle, as in the version printed here, or it may appear with a single stroke above the O that looks like an accent mark (Ó). When indexing, use the characters Ø and ø. Click here for an example.
  • The characters Æ and æ are a combination of the letters A and E but should not be written as "ae." When indexing, use the characters Æ and æ. Click here for an example.

To account for each individual, including those whose names were written in the "Fraværende" (or absent) section at the bottom of the page, you will need to adjust the number of records in the data entry area to match the number of records on the image. • If you press Tab or Enter after you complete the last record on an image, a message will appear, asking if you want to add one or more records to the image. If you have already indexed all the records on the image, do the following:
    1. Ensure that 0 (zero) is in the Number of records box.
    2. Click OK.
