Image Type

Image Type

Describe the image above. To do this, click in the Image Type field, and then click the down arrow at the right side of the field. Select an option from the list.

If the image is normal and has information to be indexed, select Normal. Then press Tab or Enter.

If there is no information to be indexed because the image is blank, has no extractable data, or is unreadable, select one of these options. Press Tab or Enter, and on the warning message, click Yes. Then submit the batch.

Note: There are a variety of documents contained in this project. Not all of the requested information will be found on every document. If you cannot find the information that needs to be indexed or you are unsure of what to index in each of the fields, please refer to the example pages for further direction. Arrival Port


Type the arrival port written on the record.

The arrival port is the port the ship arrived at in New Zealand.

If the arrival port has been misspelled, spell it correctly. If it has been abbreviated, and you can determine what the abbreviation stands for, type the complete name instead of the abbreviation. Use the lookup list for assistance.

If the arrival port was not recorded or contains a variation of the word "unknown", press Ctrl+B to mark this field as blank.

Ship's Name

Ship's Name

Type the ship's name that was written on the record, excluding punctuation except for hyphens and apostrophes when they were written on the document.

If the ship's name was not recorded or contains a variation of the word "unknown," press Ctrl+B to mark this field as blank.

Departure Date: Day

Departure Date: Day

On many documents, the departure date was recorded at the top of the page.

Type the one- or two-digit number for the day.

Do not include descriptive words, such as: "about" or "abt."

If the day was not recorded or contains a variation of the word "unknown," press Ctrl+B to mark this field as blank.

The given names may be written either before or after the surname. Watch the names carefully, and be sure to type the names into the correct fields on the indexing screen.

Do not include titles or terms with the given names, such as: Captain, Sr, Jr, etc.

If a given name was abbreviated, type the name as it was written on the document. Do not index punctuation, except for hyphens and apostrophes when they were written on the document.

If the given names were not recorded or contain a variation of the word "unknown," press Tab to skip this field.

If the name being indexed is a passenger, index this field as No.

Given Names

The given names may be written either before or after the surname. Watch the names carefully, and be sure to type the names into the correct fields on the indexing screen.

Do not include titles or terms with the given names, such as: Sr, Jr, Mrs, baby, etc.

If a given name was abbreviated, type the name as it was written on the document. Do not index punctuation, except, hyphens and apostrophes when they were written on the document.

There will be names from other cultures included. If you cannot determine if a name is a given name or a surname, index the name in this field.

If the given names were not recorded or contain a variation of the word "unknown," press Ctrl+B to mark this field as blank.

Surname

The surname may be written either before or after the given names. Watch the names carefully, and be sure to type the names into the correct fields on the indexing screen.

The surname may have been written only once for the first member of the family. However, it needs to be repeated for each family member.

Do not include titles or terms with the surname, such as: Sr, Jr, etc.

Do not index punctuation, except, hyphens and apostrophes when they were written on the document.

There will be names from other cultures included. If you cannot determine if a name is a given name or a surname, index the name in the Given Names field.

If the surname was not recorded, contains a variation of the word "unknown," or cannot be determined from the previous image, press Ctrl+B to mark this field as blank.

When the number written on the record indicates that the age refers to years, type it in this field. Do not type a y after the number.

Do not index descriptive words, such as: "abt" or "full age."

If the age was not recorded, does not contain years, or contains a variation of "unknown," press Ctrl+B to mark this field blank.

When the number written on the record indicates that the age refers to months, type it in this field. Do not type an m after the number.

Do not index descriptive words, such as: "abt" or "full age" or "Infant."

If the age was not recorded, does not contain months, or was written asa variation of the word "unknown," press Tab to skip this field.

Marital Status

Type S (for single), M (for married), D (for divorced), or (for widowed).

If the marital status was not recorded or contains a variation of "unknown," press Ctrl+B to mark this field blank.

Gender

Gender 

Type either M (for male) or F (for female).

The gender may be indicated by the location of the age. If the age was recorded in the Male column, type M. If the age was recorded in the Female column, type F.

If the gender was not recorded or contains a variation of the word "unknown," press Ctrl+B to mark this field as blank.

Country or County of Origin

Country or County of Origin

Type the country or county of origin that was written on the record.

If the country or county of origin has been misspelled, spell it correctly. If it has been abbreviated, and you can determine what the abbreviation stands for, type the complete name. Do not use commas or other punctuation marks to separate multiple levels of localities. Use the lookup list for assistance.

If the country or county of origin was not recorded or contains a variation of the word "unknown," press Ctrl+B to mark this field as blank.

Type the occupation that was written on the record.

Type the port of disembarkation that was written on the record.

The port of disembarkation is where the passenger got off the ship.

If the port of disembarkation has been misspelled, spell it correctly. If it has been abbreviated, and you can determine what the abbreviation stands for, type the complete name instead of the abbreviation. Use the lookup list for assistance.
