Record Fields and Indexing Instructions

Image Type

Image Type

To describe the image, click in the Image Type field, and then click the down arrow at the right side of the field. Select an option from the list according to the following instructions.

If the image is normal and has information to be indexed, select Normal. Then press Tab or Enter.

If the image is blank, a duplicate, or unreadable, select the corresponding option from the list.  If the data on the image does not match the indexing form, select No Extractable Data Image. Press Tab or Enter, and on the warning message, click Yes. Continue to the next image in the batch or if this is the last image in the batch, submit it.

Record Type

There are three choices for types of records in this project. Click on the links below to see samples of the different types of records found in this project.

Click in the Record Type field, and then click the down arrow at the right side of the Record Type field to select the correct record type that describes each record.

Page Number

Type the page number in the upper left or upper right side of the record.

Child's Given Names

The given names may be written either before or after the surname. Watch the names carefully, and be sure to type the names into the correct fields on the indexing screen. 

If the child is stillborn (halva szulett) or nameless (Ismeretlen or nevetelen) enter this information into the child's given names field.

If the child's given names were abbreviated, type the name as it was written on the document. Do not type a period after the abbreviation. (Hyphens and apostrophes are OK.)

If the child's given names were not recorded press Ctrl+B to mark this field as blank.

If the child's surname was not recorded, derive it from the father's surname that was recorded on the record. If there is no surname recorded for the father, derive it from the mother's surname.

Child's Gender

Type M for son (male) or F for daughter (female).

In Hungarian, "Fi" is male and "No" is female.

When the information appears to be contradictory to the given names, always index what was recorded.

If there is no indication of the gender, do not assume a gender based on the names; press Ctrl+B to mark this field as blank.
