Image Type

Image Type

Click in the Image Type field, and then click the option from the list that best describes the image.

If the image is a normal census page and has information to be indexed, select Normal.

If the image is blank, is an exact duplicate of a previous image in the same batch, or is unreadable, select the corresponding option from the list. If the image does not include a household cover sheet ("Feuille de Ménage"), select No Extractable Data Image. Press Tab or Enter, and, on the warning message, click Yes. Then continue to the next image.

Department

Department

Index what was recorded on the census form in the Département field.

In French,  “de” ”or “d’ means of. If either of these words precede the department name, do not index it. However, if one of these words is part of the department name, index it.  

If the department was misspelled, spell it correctly. If it was abbreviated and you can determine what the abbreviation stands for, type the complete name instead of the abbreviation. Use the lookup list for assistance. If you are not sure what the abbreviation stands for, index what was written, excluding punctuation.

If the department was not recorded or was written as a variation of the word "unknown," press Ctrl+B to mark this field as blank.

Subprefecture

Index what was recorded on the census form in the Sous-préfecture field.

In French,  “de” ”or “d’ means of. If either of these words precede the subprefecture name, do not index it. However, if one of these words is part of the subprefecture name, index it. 

If the subprefecture was misspelled, spell it correctly. If it was abbreviated and you can determine what the abbreviation stands for, type the complete name instead of the abbreviation. Use the lookup list for assistance. If you are not sure what the abbreviation stands for, index what was written, excluding punctuation.

If the subprefecture was not recorded or was written as a variation of the word "unknown," press Ctrl+B to mark this field as blank.

If the village was misspelled, spell it correctly. If it was abbreviated and you can determine what the abbreviation stands for, type the complete name instead of the abbreviation. Use the lookup list for assistance. If you are not sure what the abbreviation stands for, index what was written, excluding punctuation. Do not include parentheses.
